Killer cramps? Try this!

Menstrual cramps are the bane of every cycling girl’s existence. But for many of us, they don’t have to be.

That's because there's a simple way to lessen or even prevent menstrual cramps altogether. What is it? Take one to three ibuprofens (such as Advil, Motrin and Nuprin) on the three days before your period. (If you take more than one, space them out throughout the day; don't take them all at once.)

This little trick works because ibuprofen helps prevent the production of "prostaglandins", the hormone-like chemical that causes the pain from cramps. If you don't let prostaglandins build up, you don't experience the pain they cause!

Even better? You won't be taking more ibuprofen than you usually do for your cramps since, most times, you don't have to keep taking ibuprofen during your period because you won't have any pain to treat!

If you take ibuprofen once cramps begin, it's too late. While there may be a mild pain-relieving effect, the prostaglandins have already been produced, so it's not nearly as effective.

Doctors know about this little trick, but sadly only a few take the time to tell us gals about it. This is yet another way moms can help generations of daughters by passing along this simple and effective tip!

While ibuprofen is an over-the-counter medication, if you or your daughter have not taken it before and suspect you may be allergic to it or if you have stomach ulcers, consult with your physician before taking it.

PMS relief to help your daughter (and you)!

Does your daughter get cranky, blue, sensitive or easily irritated in the days before her period? That's premenstrual syndrome, better known as PMS. And it can drive the mother of a teenage girl to raid her secret stash of Pepperidge Farm cookies for comforting.

But there's good news: You can help make your daughter's PMS less intense with easy, quick tips. Even better? These methods will work to ease your PMS, too! Start with...

* Giving her a multi-vitamin every day of her cycle. Studies show that even mild deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals can worsen PMS symptoms.

* Giving her a daily calcium supplement. Studies show that 1200 mg every day significantly reduces PMS symptoms.

* Swapping her cola, tea and coffee for decaffeinated drinks.  Research has shown that caffeine aggravates PMS symptoms. Luckily, she can still eat chocolate. Despite the myth that it's loaded with caffeine, chocolate contains just a scant amount of the perky bean.

* Do more nice things for her. Surprise her with a mini shopping spree. Cook her a meal she loves. Or simply tell her outfit looks great on her. The happier she is, the higher her serotonin goes. And that's important since this feel-good brain chemical plunges during PMS, resulting in that cranky, blue, sensitive and easily irritated mood you love so much. So, the higher you can make her serotonin soar, the less of those PMS symptoms she'll have!
